How to Choose a Digital Marketing Agency in Nigeria (What to Ask Before You Hire)

Nigeria's digital marketing space has grown fast — which is good for businesses that want help, and bad for businesses trying to tell a genuinely capable agency apart from one that's just good at selling itself. The pitch meeting rarely tells you the difference. What you ask, and what you check, does.

Why the Wrong Choice Costs More Than the Contract

A bad agency doesn't just fail to deliver results — it costs you the months you spent waiting to find out, the ad budget spent without proper tracking, and often the credibility of "digital marketing" itself inside your own business. Founders who get burned once tend to under-invest in marketing for years afterward, which is a much bigger loss than the retainer fee.

Questions to Ask Before You Sign Anything

  • "Can you show me a client's actual results, not just the campaigns you ran?" — Ask for numbers: leads generated, cost per acquisition, traffic growth. Screenshots of pretty ad creative are not evidence of performance.
  • "What does your reporting look like, and how often do I get it?" — Get a sample report before you sign, not after. If they can't show you one, they probably don't have a real reporting process.
  • "Who exactly will be working on my account?" — Many agencies pitch with senior talent and hand execution to junior staff. Ask who does the actual day-to-day work.
  • "What happens if the results aren't there after 90 days?" — Their answer tells you whether they've thought about accountability at all, or whether the retainer is the whole business model.
  • "What's included, and what counts as a paid extra?" — Landing pages, ad creative, copywriting, and analytics setup are sometimes billed separately. Get this in writing before you compare prices between agencies.

Red Flags That Should End the Conversation

  • Guaranteed Google rankings or a guaranteed number of leads — no legitimate agency can promise this, because they don't control the algorithm or your market.
  • Vague answers about tracking and analytics — if they can't clearly explain how they'll measure success before you've paid them, that won't improve after you have.
  • Reluctance to provide references or past client contacts — a confident agency wants you to talk to happy clients.
  • Pressure to sign quickly, or discounts tied to signing today — legitimate agencies don't need urgency tactics to win business.

What a Fair Contract Looks Like

Look for a clear scope of work (what's actually included), a defined reporting cadence, ownership of your accounts and data (you should own your Google Ads, Meta Business Manager, and analytics accounts, not the agency), and a reasonable exit clause — 30 days' notice is standard, not a 12-month lock-in with no way out.
